Audrey Apparel is a crochet focused clothing brand. With the rise of fast fashion, she creates clothing that utilizes sustainable and second hand materials to create wearable art for everybody. Every stitch is made by hand and designed by Audrey Valys to create unique pieces that will last. She uses a mix of fiber art mediums to design clothes that can make a statement or be worn everyday.
Explain your thought process behind starting your own brand. What motivated you to even try?
Crochet has been passed down from all the woman in my family. I started crocheting at 9 years old and have always had a love for art and fashion, my friends and family have been my main motivation to start the brand encouraging me to take it from a hobby to a career. My goal was to create a brand that appreciates the hours of work that goes into fiber art and appreciate it as an art form and not just a hobby.
What does Beyond The Runway mean to you?
Beyond The Runway is a great platform to share the experiences that come with staring your own brand. It’s important to hear stories from people that have had success in the fashion industry and have people from all walks of life to look up to.
Why did you pursue fashion as a career/hobby?
I decided to pursue fashion as a career to express my creativity and emotions. Fiber art is often seen as a hobby or craft as opposed to art and I want to show that it can be both. My focus on avant-garde crochet shows that crochet is not only an art form but an amazing way to create clothing that has a meaning.
Who motivates you to pursue your dreams and never give up?
My biggest motivators in fashion have been my mom, my friends, and De’Andre Hardy the creator of Vlush and Vlush fest who has welcomed me into the wonderful fashion community he has created in Massachusetts.
